The 2023-2024 season risks being memorable for Catherine Foulem.
The hockey player from Dieppe also received a great mark of recognition by being named assistant captain of the Boston University Terriers.
Better yet, the team that plays in the Hockey East conference should make a return among the best teams in the league following three difficult seasons.
On the academic side, the 21-year-old athlete is starting her fourth year in biology and wishes to continue her studies in medicine.
She says she is happy to wear an A on her sweater.
“Honestly, it’s a big privilege. It’s something I’ve always wanted. I try to set an example for the youngest. I arrive at the arena, I do my things, I get to work and I work hard,” she says.
Catherine Foulem will have the role of big sister to the youngest, both on the ice and at school.
“It’s important to have someone the rookies can look up to and to have a good role model on the ice. They can come to me for anything and I will try to help them,” says the center player.
“I want to be there for my teammates and show them that they can count on me.”
She says she has felt a wind of optimism blowing through her team since the start of training camp.
“I think it will be a great year. We’re trying to win a championship. All the girls are excited and really motivated. I of course hope to play a big role in the team,” she explains.
“But ultimately all that matters is that the team wins.”
The Terriers did a big cleanup this summer, hiring Tara Watchorn, who is also coach of the Canadian S-18 team.
Several high-profile recruits also join the team, including Brooke Disher and Alex Law, two members of the Canadian S-22 team, Tamara Giaquinto (who played with Team Canada S-18) and goalie Callie Shanahan, a product of the American S-22 team.
“Our training is really very intense. Everything is structured and the coaches have a specific plan for each day,” says the Acadian player.
The Terriers’ last championship dates back to the 2014-2015 season, when the team was led by Marie-Philip Poulin.
Participation in the NCAA national tournament cannot be ruled out and Catherine Foulem intends to do everything to get there.
However, she does not lose sight of the importance of her studies.
“This season I want to enjoy every moment and have a balance with my studies. My goal is really to become a doctor.”
The Terriers will play a preparatory game on September 30 once morest the McGill University Martlets.
The regular season begins on October 6, with a duel once morest the Northeastern University Huskies.
