Rising Speeding and Driving Offenses in Ireland: Gardaí Crack Down on Dangerous Driving

Dublin : 3,000 drivers caught speeding in Ireland over Bank Holiday weekend. 120 km per hour. The ‘star’ was an ‘expert’ driver who flew at 228km/h on a road where speeding is not required. He was caught in Balgateran on the M1 in Drogheda, Louth.

Authorities also caught a driver doing 153km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N61 in Caronnalasson, Mayo, and 148km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R339 at Glentivag Oranmore in Galway. The speeder and another were caught speeding on the R700 at Knockavilla, New Ross, Wexford, clocked at 143km/h in a 60km/h lane.

Two people died in road accidents during this period. There were 11 car accidents. 12 people were seriously injured. According to the figures, 21 people have been killed in road accidents since the beginning of the new year.

Between February 1 and 6, 3,000 drivers were caught for speeding. 110 people were arrested for using mobile phones while driving and 61 people were arrested for not wearing seat belts. More than 100 learner’s permit holders were also caught for driving without a licensed driver. 420 vehicles that ran without paying insurance and tax were seized.

Gardaí appealed to drivers to slow down and drive at a suitable speed for the conditions. Gardaí reminded drivers to wear seat belts and not to use mobile phones while driving.
