Gerrit Tscheru reports that as Carinthia sips its morning coffee, it seems to be greeted by an unwelcome guest: rising sickness rates! Yes, folks, illnesses are creeping back into our homes like an unwanted relative who doesn’t know when to leave. Flu, corona, and flu-like infections are erupting like a bad case of the flakes during winter. And just like your Aunt Marge’s Christmas pudding, you know it’s probably going to make you sick!
It’s Official: Everyone Is Sick!
Statistics provided by the ÖGK reveal that last week, a whopping 12,391 sick days were reported in our beloved Carinthia! That’s a serious amount of couch time. And, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to spend their day binge-watching terrible reality TV instead of hacking their lungs up at work? But there’s more, as flu-like infections counted for 3,078 of those days! The flu seems to be throwing one heck of a party, and trust me, not everyone has been invited!
To add to our collective sinus woes, just last week recorded 46 new cases of people feeling under the weather. I mean, what’s a few hundred more sniffs and coughs in the air? But this isn’t just the flu we’re dealing with, folks; Covid-19 is still lurking in the background, watching us like a hawk that’s had too much caffeine. Except now, it’s just a quiet spectator because, since July 2023, it’s no longer ‘reportable!’ I guess they just decided to give up on reporting it, just like I give up on my New Year’s resolutions by February!
Vaccination: The Real MVP
Now, before we spiral into complete panic and start hoarding toilet paper again, let’s talk vaccinations. ÖGK’s chief physician, Andreas Krauter, urges folks to roll up their sleeves for a free flu vaccination. Yes, you heard that right—FREE! It’s like finding a tenner in your coat pocket. And while vaccines won’t stop you from binge-eating snacks while watching “The Great British Bake Off,” they might just protect you from the flu’s blissful embrace that leaves you regretting all your poor life choices.
Krauter warns that “real flu is not a simple cold, but a serious illness.” So, if you’re in a high-risk group or have been death-staring the calendar for your next cold and flu season, don’t be a hero, get vaccinated! You can find a vaccination center near you by visiting the ÖGK and federal websites. Seriously, it’ll be worth your while—better a quick pinprick than yet another week of misery on your couch!

According to a press release issued on November 18th, the Austrian Health Fund has reported an uptick in sickness rates due to flu-like infections and influenza in the region. In Carinthia, the number of individuals out sick from the flu, flu-like infections, or COVID-19 rose by 46 cases compared to the previous week. During the last week, a total of 12,391 sick days were registered with the ÖGK in Carinthia, which comprised 3,078 cases attributed to flu-like symptoms, 20 due to influenza, and 128 linked to COVID-19. Comparatively, in calendar week 45, the data reflected 2,757 sick days stemming from flu-like infections, alongside seven confirmed cases of influenza and 172 cases of COVID-19. It is important to note that since July 1, 2023, COVID-19 is no longer classified as a reportable disease, resulting in a decrease in testing. Consequently, the actual number of unreported cases may be significantly higher.
Flu vaccination available free of charge
ÖGK chief physician Andreas Krauter strongly urges the public to take advantage of the free flu vaccination: “Real flu is not a simple cold, but a serious illness. A flu shot significantly enhances your protection. In particular, individuals with chronic illnesses, those aged 60 and over, and pregnant women are strongly advised to get vaccinated, as they face higher risks of severe health complications.” Detailed information about vaccination centers, which are available for free to all residents of Austria, can be easily accessed on both the federal website and the ÖGK platform.
What specific measures can residents take to prevent the spread of illnesses in Carinthia during the colder months?
**Interview with Dr. Andreas Krauter, Chief Physician at ÖGK**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Krauter. With the recent reports highlighting a surge in illness rates in Carinthia, can you explain what specific illnesses we’re seeing most frequently?
**Dr. Krauter:** Thank you for having me! Currently, we’re seeing a significant rise in flu cases as well as COVID-19 infections, although the latter are no longer officially reportable past July 2023. Flu-like illnesses have also taken a toll, accounting for a large portion of the 12,391 sick days reported last week.
**Editor:** Those numbers are certainly alarming! Why do you think we’re experiencing such an uptick in sickness right now?
**Dr. Krauter:** Seasonal factors play a big role. As we head into colder months, people tend to spend more time indoors, facilitating the spread of respiratory infections. Additionally, after the long periods of social distancing during the pandemic, our immune systems may not be as prepared to handle these viruses anymore.
**Editor:** Speaking of preparation, you mentioned vaccinations in your message. Can you share why you’re advocating for the flu vaccine specifically?
**Dr. Krauter:** Absolutely! The flu can lead to severe complications, especially for those in high-risk groups. Vaccination is our best defense. The flu vaccine can significantly reduce your risk of illness and help protect not only yourself but also those around you. And it is free, which makes it an easy choice for preventive care!
**Editor:** Some people might resist vaccination, thinking they can tough it out. What do you say to that?
**Dr. Krauter:** It’s important to remember that flu is not just a bad cold—it can be a serious illness that requires hospitalization. Getting vaccinated is a proactive step to avoid potential health crises. I highly encourage everyone, especially those vulnerable, to visit an ÖGK vaccination center. A quick jab is certainly preferable to a week of misery on the couch!
**Editor:** That sounds like solid advice. As we wrap up, what can residents of Carinthia do beyond getting vaccinated to stay healthy during this surge?
**Dr. Krauter:** Staying vigilant with personal hygiene is key. Regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded places, and avoiding close contact with those who are sick can help reduce the spread. Also, prioritize rest, a balanced diet, and hydration, as these can strengthen your immune system.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Krauter, for your insightful answers and for emphasizing the importance of vaccinations. Here’s hoping Carinthia remains healthy and vigilant this season!
**Dr. Krauter:** Thank you for having me! Let’s all keep up the good fight against illness together.
