Rising Sales of Electric Cars in Europe: Tesla and MG Motor Lead the Charge in 2023

ANALYSE – Purchases of new cars started to rise once more in 2023 following three years of decline. Tesla and MG Motor are the most dynamic.

The electric car put the turbo in Europe. In 2023, battery vehicles will gain momentum with sales increasing by 37% year-on-year. With a 14.6% market share, they overtake diesel for the first time over an entire year (13.6%), which continues to decline. New vehicle buyers in Europe made it the third most popular choice, behind petrol cars (35.3% of sales) and hybrids (25.8% of the market).

This increase in sales of electric cars has given new color to the European automobile market. It started to rise once more last year (+13.9%) following three years of decline. Certainly, the contrast remains striking when we look in the rearview mirror: almost a third of sales were lost between 2019 and 2023 with 10.5 million vehicles sold last year but 15.3 million in 2019, before the shock of Covid, from which the industry has not recovered.
