Rising Rates of Material and Social Deprivation in French Households: A Shocking Peak in 2022

The rate of “material and social deprivation” of French households reached a historic peak in France in 2022, according to the director general of INSEE.

In an interview published on Saturday by Le Parisien, Jean-Luc Tavernier indicates that the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) carries out “each year a survey to assess the number of people in a situation of “material or social deprivation” , that is to say who cannot cover expenses for at least five elements of everyday life out of thirteen, such as being able to feed themselves correctly, heat their home to the right temperature, buy new clothes, access to Internet or meeting with friends for a drink or a meal at least once a month.

“At the start of 2022, their proportion was 14% in France,” indicates the director of the institute, or more than 9 million people.

“This is the highest level since the creation of this indicator in 2013,” he explains, recalling that the results of the survey relating to 2022 were published in July 2023 and that the survey for the situation this year continues.

In January 2022, 9.6% of French households were unable to pay rent, interest on various unpaid bills and bills on time. 9.4% of them could not eat meat, fish or a vegetarian equivalent every other day; 10.1% could not afford new clothes; 15.9% could not see a regular paid leisure activity; and 24.4% could not afford a week of vacation during the year, according to INSEE.

As a reminder, a recent survey carried out by Secours populaire, in partnership with the IPSOS institute, revealed that one in five French people live in the open and that one in three has difficulty eating three meals a day.
