Rising Prices: Prepare for Increases of 5-25% in 2024

Price increases ranging from 5 to 25%

On the set of BFM Business, Michel-Édouard Leclerc warns in the face of government optimism. “ I don’t know of any markets that will decline, except marginally », he says, illustrating the reality of an economy faced with increasing costs. And the landscape is hardly more encouraging when we observe the first proposals from manufacturers for 2024. With increases ranging “from 5 to 25%”, it is clear that the sector is preparing for a tense context.

The government, in its quest for price moderation, is banking on progress in commercial negotiations between manufacturers and supermarkets. But for Leclerc, this decision seems disconnected from the realities on the ground. Manufacturers, faced with economic uncertainties, are hesitant to set their general conditions of sale. “ If in doubt regarding the evolution of their costs, they will ask for price increases », explains the boss of the E.Leclerc centers.

For Leclerc, there will be no drop in prices

The bill currently under debate in Parliament aims to review the timetable for negotiations. The idea: reach an agreement earlier to influence prices on the shelves. But even in the face of this attempt at regulation, Michel-Édouard Leclerc’s position remains firm and unequivocal. “ It’s very clear, there will be no price drops “. With redesigned deadlines. December 31 for companies with less than 350 million euros in turnover and January 15 for others. The challenge seems daunting.

E.Leclerc maintains an ambitious course despite a tense economic context. That of bringing the inflation of everyday consumer products in line with general inflation, ideally below 5%. This is a real challenge when we know that inflation rose to 4.9% in September 2023. And the situation becomes even more difficult when we note that food inflation is dangerously approaching 10%.
