In ten years, according to figures from the Lifewatch of the Catholic University of Louvain, the population of black crows has increased by 12%; that of the rook by 96% and that of the jackdaw by 150%.

“Corvids and wild boars are the two animals that have the most impact on crops, but at different times,” explains Didier Vieuxtemps, expert in the field with the Walloon Federation of Agriculture (FWA).

“Corvids pose a lot of problems when the seedlings emerge, whereas wild boars are more at harvest time. Farmers are at a loss when faced with these species which cause significant damage to crops. At the FWA, we have to respond to more and more requests from farmers who call us, both for the damage caused by corvids and for the wild boars that are found more and more in the four corners of Wallonia. ”

In 2021, the amount of assessed boar damage, all crops combined in Wallonia, amounted to €900,000. This is the second highest amount since 2008.
