Researchers said the number of American women who died within a year following pregnancy more than doubled between 1999 and 2019, and that the highest number of deaths occurred among black women.

A study published in JAMA Medical Journal indicates that there were an estimated 1,210 maternal deaths in 2019, compared to regarding 505 in 1999.

Results The researchers said the largest increases in that period were among women from indigenous communities such as American Indians and Alaska Natives. The researchers estimated that the number of deaths per 100,000 live infant births increased from 12.7 to 32.2 overall, from 14.0 to 49.2 among American Indians and Alaska Natives, from 26.7 to 55.4 among blacks, and from 9.6 to 20.9 among Asians and people of Indian descent. Hawaii and other Pacific islands, from 9.6 to 19.1 among Hispanics, and from 9.4 to 26.3 among whites. Unlike previous US studies of maternal mortality that focused on national trends, the current study analyzed data state by state. To the researchers’ surprise, the highest maternal mortality rates in some northeastern states were among black women. Southern states had the highest maternal mortality rate among all races and ethnic groups but especially among blacks, while Midwestern and Great Plains states had the highest maternal mortality rates among American Indian and Alaska Native women.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the most common causes of death within one year postterm pregnancy included:

“Our findings provide important insights into postpartum maternal mortality rates in the years leading up to the pandemic, and it is likely that we will see a continued increase in maternal mortality risks across all population groups,” said Dr. If we analyze the data of subsequent years.”

“It is likely that blacks will still have the highest rates, but there may be a larger rise in some other groups in the past few years,” she added.
