The number of homicides in the country continues to rise and the most recent Forensic Medicine report shows that there are already 12,682 murders in relation to November 2023, which compared to the previous year – for the same period – 12,045 cases were registered, a figure which highlights the increase in deaths due to this modality in 637 more cases than last year, with a percentage variation of 5.29. It also shows that it is the largest increase since 2018, without taking into account the pandemic, since in that year the increase was 5.54%.

The report also shows that, between January and November of this year, the first place in deaths is occupied by homicide, with 47.76%, followed by transportation events (28.65%), accidentally (12.80%). %) and finally, suicide, with 10.80%.

Legal Medicine also explains: “When a case is classified in the homicide category, the crime is not classified, nor are liability judgments made, since these activities are the responsibility of the Attorney General’s Office and the judges of the Republic.” .

Regarding the homicides recorded by victims by gender, Legal Medicine indicated that 11,763 were men, while 912 correspond to women.

Among the cities that register the highest number of deaths from this cause, Bogotá occupies first place (1,011), followed by Cali (954), Medellín (345), Cartagena (387) and Barranquilla (386). Those with the fewest homicides: Tunja, with seven, and Puerto Carreño, with eight victims.

A call to the Minister of Defense

And in view of the serious acts of violence that have been recorded in recent days in different departments of Colombia, and in view of the little response that the current government has had to counteract the armed groups, the Attorney General’s Office made a strong slap on the wrist to the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, reminding him that his main task is to combat violence and provide security to all Colombians.
