The Medellín District Ombudsman issued an alert regarding a follow-up that it has been carrying out with HIV AIDS in the city, which determined that there is currently a high number of active cases in the capital of Antioquia.
For this reason, the public ministry agency asked the entire Paisa community to strictly follow prevention strategies in sexual and reproductive health in order to prevent the spread of this disease.
The objective of these strategies is to reduce the transmission of diseases and of HIV itself, especially in key or more vulnerable populations.
According to the Ministry of Health and the Epidemiological Surveillance System, for the first quarter of 2023, 392 cases of HIV/AIDS were registered in the District of Medellín, of which 45% belong to people between the age range of 20 to 29. years; 100 cases from 25 to 29 years and 77 cases from 20 to 24 years. Likewise, the largest number of cases is concentrated in communes 4 – Aranjuez, 3 – Manrique, 7 – Robledo and 8 – Villa Hermosa.

These data have generated great concern in the Ombudsman, for which reason it launched the alert at the city level. In addition, through the Observatory of Women, Sexual and Gender Diversities, and the Observatory of the Fundamental Right to Health, the Ombudsman will carry out surveillance in conjunction with these other public entities in order to achieve a greater scope in work to raise awareness of the care of sexual health in Medellin.
On the other hand, they invite the continuity of the articulated work with the District Health Secretariat and other competent entities, to advance strategies that help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the city, specifically in minors.

How does HIV AIDS develop in humans?
This human immunodeficiency virus has attacked people for decades, being one of the deadliest viruses and there is still no cure. According to several researchers’ analyses, women are most at risk of contracting the virus through sexual intercourse. That is why they always recommend using sexual protection properly when having intimacy with another person.
However, experts have not stopped working to find a cure, since so far progress has been made on a possible vaccine for the prevention of HIV.
Studies in general indicate that this virus is destroying the body’s defense system as time goes by. It directly attacks the entire immune system and remains permanently in the body. Today there are treatments that help control it, but care must be taken due to the weakness that the user presents when carrying it.
Lucila Villegas, former representative of Censida, from the Ministry of Health, explained that: “All infected women are heterosexual, while in men the figure is 39 percent. This figure demolishes the belief that HIV and AIDS is a disease of homosexuals, since in this sector the disease is decreasing.”
Finally, according to UNAIDS, Colombia has been one of the countries in Latin America with the most reported HIV in recent years. The most recommended option by specialists is the use of condoms, since it is a simple, safe method and within everyone’s reach. As it is public knowledge, it is intended to prevent contracting viruses and the transmission of diseases.
