Rising Heat-Related Deaths: Alarming Increase in South Korea’s Summer Mortality Rate

According to this Agency, from the end of May and until August 8 27 people died in the country of supposedly heat-related illnesses. It is the highest indicator since 2018, the year in which high temperatures caused the death of 48 people.

Between May 20 and August 8, 2,085 people were hospitalized due to the heat, including patients who would have fatal outcomes. It is also the largest number since 2018. 30.9 percent of those hospitalized are over 65 years of age.

The KDCA points out that the indicators of heat mortality may increase, since the respective data will be collected until September.

Scorching heat has been maintained in South Korea for more than two weeks, in several regions of the country the temperature was recorded up to 38°C.
