Environ 1.3 billion people might be affected by diabetes in the next 30 yearscompared to 529 million in 2021. Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugar levels, which can lead to serious complications for the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. The number of people with diabetes continues to grow worldwide. In 1980, there were regarding 108 million diabeticsthis number increased to 422 million in 2014then to 529 million in 2021. According to researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine, this number is expected to reach 1.3 billion in 2050 (source 1).
Today, the prevalence of diabetes is 6.1% of the world’s population. These are the most vulnerable populations who stand to pay the highest price, even though everyone can be affected. Over time, this prevalence is expected to reach 16.8% in North Africa and the Middle East, and 11.3% in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2050, compared to around 9.8% globally.
