Bangkok, March 12 (VNA) – The number of dengue patients in Thailand this year reached 17,783, more than double the figure in the corresponding period last year, Thai Public Health Minister Cholnan said Srikaew.

The disease has killed 25 people in 16 provinces this year alone, he was quoted as saying by local media.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn said the death rate from dengue was much higher than those from influenza and COVID-19, reaching 0.14 per 100 cases, compared to 0.01 to 0.02 deaths per 100 influenza patients.
The Ministry of Public Health has allocated THB74.8 million ($2.6 million) for the distribution of mosquito repellent sprays or lotions to dengue patients, it said.
Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn pointed out that if people protect themselves from mosquito bites, even for five days, they can save the ministry regarding THB219 million in treatment costs. – VNA
