Rising Death Toll: Two Tragic Femicides Shake Belgium, Highlight Urgent Need for Awareness and Action

Two women lost their lives under the blows of their companion, or their ex-companion last Friday. Two femicides that occurred in Flémalle and Antoing. They were 26 and 41 years old.

Friday evening, 26-year-old Alexandra comes to pick up her last belongings from her ex-companion, in Flémalle. Ethan is 21 years old. The couple had just separated a few weeks earlier. The young mother spends part of the evening there, but around 1 a.m., the young man gets angry following seeing a message on his ex’s mobile phone. Alexandra would have found love once more. Taken by a violent anger, Ethan would have pushed Alexandra who falls. His head hits the ground violently. She is unconscious. He calls the police directly, telling them in a panic: “I think I killed my ex-girlfriend.”

The mother of a 4-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy is taking place today to find out the exact cause of death. Place under arrest warrant, and in confession, the ex-companion spent the weekend behind bars. Alexandra was the mother of a young child.

Tragically stable numbers

The same day, in Antoing, Engie, a woman, was stabbed. She died during the night in hospital. The author, who would be his companion, will be prosecuted for murder or assassination. An argument would have broken out within the couple, whose man would have stabbed his concubine several times.

The Wallonia Picardy emergency services were dispatched to the scene with an SMUR and an ambulance. After being stabilized by emergency physicians, the victim was admitted in very serious condition to the emergency department of the Union ChWapi center in Tournai.

“The days of this lady are in danger”, had indicated Friday evening the prosecutor of the king of Tournai. “The victim died Friday evening around 11:45 p.m.“, said Saturday followingnoon Dominique Decaluwé, deputy public prosecutor at the Tournai-Mons prosecutor’s office. An autopsy of the victim’s body was performed on Saturday. The alleged perpetrator was apprehended the same day by the police of the Tournaisis area.
