Amid concerns about the spread of bed bugs in France, the government has taken a new step: Education Minister Gabriel Attal closed seven schools, he told France 5 television on Friday. Since the end of the summer holidays, there have been increasing reports on social media channels about the presence of nocturnal parasites in cinemas, trains and the Paris metro.

The number of school closures has recently increased because a few hours before Minister Attal, the Ministry of Education said that five schools with a total of 1,500 students had been closed. Earlier this week, authorities announced that two schools – one in Marseille and the other near Lyon – had been closed. Because of cleaning work, how hot it is.

The French government held a series of meetings this week to examine the rising number of reported bed bug cases – at a time when France is hosting the Rugby World Cup and preparing to host the 2024 Olympics in Paris. “We have almost 60,000 facilities and we are only talking about a few here – but it is true that cases are increasing,” said Attal.

List of “approved” companies for removal

In any case, a rapid response is important in order to treat the affected facilities within 24 hours, said the minister. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the regional health authorities, a list of “approved and recognized” companies has been created “so that school management has the appropriate contacts and they can intervene very quickly”.

It is estimated that a tenth of all French households have had a bed bug problem in recent years, usually requiring a pest control operation costing several hundred euros that needs to be repeated frequently. The parasites have been reported on the Paris metro, on trains and at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport – but the individual cases have not been confirmed by authorities.

Bed bugs largely disappeared from everyday life in the 1950s, but have been increasingly present for the past three decades. This is exacerbated by travel, buying used clothing, growing resistance to insecticides and probably also by climate change. Reference is made to rules: Travelers should not place suitcases on hotel beds – and suspected infested laundry should be washed at 60 degrees.
