Au Denmark, since May, an increasing number of cases of whooping cough have been recorded, and over the summer this number has continued to increase. This increase was observed throughout the country, with the exception of Bornholm.
A total of 1,229 cases of whooping cough were detected in 2023. There is a clear increase between the 12 cases detected in January and the 439 cases detected in August, when usually fewer than 100 cases are recorded per month. Reported cases correspond exclusively to laboratory-confirmed cases.
The incidence is particularly high in children under one year of age, in older children aged 9 to 19, and in adults aged 40 to 50.
Vaccination once morest whooping cough is part of the Danish vaccination program (3-5-12 months and 5 years), but it does not provide lifelong protection. Due to the increase in incidence this summer, a temporary offer of pertussis vaccination for pregnant women was reintroduced on August 1, 2023. Pregnant women are recommended to be vaccinated once morest pertussis during the second or the third trimester of pregnancy. This gives the infant protection that lasts until the child can receive the first vaccination at three months of age.
