In Bashkiria this year, eight people became infected with a dangerous infection. The regional Rospotrebnadzor spoke regarding this.
We are talking regarding a generalized menigococcal infection. Five of the eight cases occurred in children under 14 years of age. The incidence rate in the Republic of Belarus (0.2 per 100 thousand people) does not exceed that in the country (0.3).
Experts noted that meningococcal infection is an acute infectious disease with an aerosol transmission mechanism. It is characterized by various forms of the infectious process: from a local form (nasopharyngitis) to generalized forms in the form of general intoxication and damage to the soft meninges of the brain with the development of meningitis, as well as an asymptomatic form (bacteria carriage). The causative agent of the infection is meningococcus Neisseria meningitidis, the source is an infected person. The main route of transmission of infection is airborne droplets. Infection through household items is also possible.
It is noteworthy that in most patients, when meningococcus enters the body, the disease does not manifest itself and is detected only during bacteriological examination. In 10-20% of patients, a picture of acute nasopharyngitis develops. Meningococcal nasopharyngitis occurs like a common acute respiratory viral infection; infection is also discovered only following a positive culture result from the nasopharyngeal mucosa. One in a thousand sick children develops meningococcal sepsis (severe intoxication, a hemorrhagic star-shaped rash that appears first on the feet, legs, skin of the buttocks, then on all limbs and torso).
