In recent months, the number of Limburg companies that have been victims of fraud is increasing, explains Het Belang van Limburg. Latest victim, Karel Rutten, an entrepreneur from Kinrooi.

He didn’t suspect anything until his accountant sent him a statement of the last invoices received. There, Karel noticed that a bundle of money was missing: “Coming from customers who normally always pay on time,” he explains to the Nieuwsblad. “I phoned them, but they assured me that they had already paid the money a while ago.”

Fact. The invoices had been sent and paid in March. The problem was that the money had not been paid into Karel’s account, but into the accounts of fraudsters, who had in fact intercepted his bills. “They have been copied. Everything matches except the account number.” In total, Karel and his company lost more than 10,000 euros

Coincidence or not, Karel deposited his invoices in the same mailbox as another entrepreneur who recently fell victim to the same process.

The Limburg public prosecutor’s office is conducting its own investigation as there have been many cases in the region. No suspect has so far been arrested. The account numbers to which the money was paid have, however, been blocked. Bpost explains to our colleagues that it has opened its own investigation. What is certain is that Karel will no longer call on the distribution company to send his invoices: “It’s over. From now on, I will send all my invoices digitally. I hope that Bpost will take its responsibilities and compensate me”.
