Unia has received 19 reports “of all kinds” linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the spokesperson for the Belgian anti-discrimination institution told Belga on Friday.
“Experience unfortunately shows us that when the Israeli-Palestinian conflict experiences episodes of war, terrorism, reprisals and violence which are highly publicized, this provokes essentially anti-Semitic acts and remarks in Belgium, even if it appears sometimes also anti-Arab or anti-Muslim remarks,” deplores Unia in an article published on his website.
The institution therefore fears “a resurgence of acts and speeches of hatred, especially of an anti-Semitic nature”. To date, it has received 19 reports “of all kinds”, said the spokesperson, who did not wish to detail further, as the notifications still need to be analyzed.
To court
“Inciting hatred, violence or discrimination, defacing buildings, harassing, beating, assaulting or threatening people because they are Jewish (or Arab or Muslim), approving or justifying the genocide committed by the Nazi regime during the Second World War are all reprehensible behaviors that the situation in the Middle East can in no way justify,” warns Unia on its site.
All files are analyzed by Unia, which “reserves the possibility of taking legal action if violations of legislation once morest racism, discrimination or negationism should be noted”. Referral to disciplinary authorities or media regulators is also possible.
