A third pack has officially settled in the Hautes Fagnes in the east of the country. Consistent and repeated clues make it possible to confirm this. The growth in the number of wolves in Wallonia and Belgium continues, attacks on herds remain under control this year.
A third Walloon pack has just been detected. The public service of Wallonia has collected numerous clues demonstrating the existence of cubs in the Hautes Fagnes but these young people cannot be the offspring of the two couples already established in the Region.
These would therefore be young people from a third couple who have so far gone under the radar: “Lhe detection of the presence of cubs at too great a distance from the birthing areas previously used by Maxima and Akela proves that they are not the parents. We know, in fact, that in the first weeks of life, cubs do not yet hunt themselves and remain in the direct vicinity of their den. This new data therefore seems surprising“, explains the SPW in a press release.
After the recent confirmation of the birth of cubs in the pack formed by Akéla and Maxima, the first couple installed in Wallonia, but also of a first litter within the North Eifel pack, composed of a male of Italian- alpine and a female of German-Polish lineage from the first litter of the Hautes Fagnes pack, it would therefore be a third pack composed of a young male with the sweet name of GW2543m.
Born in 2021, this wolf is a son of Akéla and Maxima: “The most likely hypothesis is that this young wolf settled on the outskirts of the parental territory where it would have captured a dispersing female. Other genetic analyzes will be necessary, in particular to establish the identity of his companion if she might have been listed in a neighboring country before her dispersion.
