Many political science professors classify the movement of a group of Egyptian army officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser on July 23, 1952 to overthrow the monarchy as the first military coup in Africa in modern history, specifically the middle of the last century, with the rise of liberation movements from colonialism.

Since 1950, the world has witnessed regarding 486 military coup attempts, of which 214 were attempted in Africa alone, with Africa topping the list of continents in terms of the number of coup attempts by 44%.

Out of a total of those attempts, 242 attempts around the world succeeded in bringing the leaders of the military coup to power, including 106 in Africa alone, according to a study prepared by researchers Jonathan Powell and Clayton Thain at the University of Kentucky, USA.

45 African countries out of 54 countries on the continent witnessed a military coup attempt at least once, and Sudan leads the continent with 17 coup attempts, of which 6 succeeded.

Over the past 3 years (August 2020-August 2023), Africa witnessed 18 military coup attempts, of which 9 succeeded, including 4 coups in only two countries: 2 Mali (August 2020 and May 2021) and Burkina Faso (January 2022 and September 2022).
