A 62-year-old cyclist, father of four children, was fatally hit by a 32-year-old motorist last Saturday in Diksmuide. The motorist was under the influence of flakka, a synthetic drug which can be compared to a zombie drug and which wreaks havoc. Three other people were injured.
Relatives of the victim, Herman Tanghe, reacted angrily to the news. “We knew that the alcohol tests were negative but that we suspected the presence of drugs due to his irrational behavior following the accident,” explains Natascha, Herman’s former partner, to our colleagues at Nieuwsblad. “The fact that these are such heavy drugs makes us angry. He was taken from life by stupid drugs, it’s hard. We now hope that justice will be done and that an exemplary sentence will be given to them. inflicted.”
“Cleaning” operations at the Gare du Midi: “We have lost track of a good number of homeless people who have vanished into thin air”
Obviously, the individual tried to flee following committing the accident but witnesses neutralized him on the ground while waiting for the police to arrive. He faces a heavy prison sentence as well as a lifetime suspension of his driving license. The council chamber decided last Friday to keep him in detention for an additional month.
A 39-year-old woman took her ex-boyfriend hostage for thirty hours
This synthetic drug is increasingly consumed in Belgium. Last May, a 39-year-old woman from Houthulst was sentenced to three years in prison for taking her ex-boyfriend hostage for thirty hours and beating him bloody with a baton and a punching bag. The judge said the woman had lashed out “like an animal”. “I didn’t recognize myself,” said the defendant. “An acquaintance gave me flakka and I went on a rampage like crazy.”
Flakka is known scientifically as alpha-PVP. “It belongs to the class of synthetic amphetamines, a designer drug. This drug is gaining popularity. Users claim that they have an experience similar to that of ecstasy but the effects are much stronger. It leads to increased heart rate which can go as far as heart failure”, explains Bruno Valkeneers, spokesperson for the ASBL Transit.
As for the non-profit organization Dune, which helps the most vulnerable people in the capital, we are seeing a resurgence of this drug on the streets. This drug has the specificity of producing hallucinations which will push the user to believe that they are being attacked by another individual and therefore to defend themselves in a savage manner.
