The percentage of the population who consumes cannabis on the island of Montreal has jumped by 35% in recent years, an increase attributable not to young people, but to people in their thirties, forties and seniors.

Between 2018 and 2022, the rate of Montrealers consuming cannabis increased from 17 to 23%, an increase of 35% in the rate of the population who uses the drug at least once a year, reported the Regional Directorate of Cannabis. public health of Montreal in a study published Thursday.

The portrait of consumers has changed especially among those aged 35 to 54, going from 14 to 23% of Montrealers in this age group to have tried cannabis at least once in the last year. The increase is even greater, proportionally, among those aged 55 and over with a rate which has gone from 6 to 10%.

On the other hand, cannabis use has hardly changed among young people, remaining around 33% among 18-20 year olds and 42% among 21-24 year olds.

At the same time, the legalization of cannabis in October 2018 made it possible to make the consumption of this drug more commonplace. Now, 63% of Montrealers consider occasional cannabis consumption acceptable, a rate which was only 47% in 2018.

Montrealers are also quicker to obtain supplies from legal sources like the SQDC.

“According to this regional portrait, the strict supervision of cannabis in Quebec, including the establishment of a sales model not focused on the free market, has enabled the transfer of consumers to the legal market, while avoiding an increase in consumption among young people,” concluded the Montreal Regional Directorate of Public Health.
