The marathon world record holder, 24-year-old Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptum, died in a serious car accident on Sunday.

The car accident occurred at around 11pm local time on the 11th. Kiptum was driving at the time, but the vehicle suddenly lost control and veered off the road, hitting a large tree and causing serious damage to the vehicle. Kiptum and the coach died on the spot. There was a third passenger in the car who survived with serious injuries.

Kiptum is the first runner in history to finish an official marathon in less than 2 hours and 1 minute. He set a record of 2 hours and 35 seconds at the Chicago Marathon last October. The record has just been recognized by World Athletics. Kiptum was originally a sprinter, but a year after switching to the marathon, he achieved brilliant results and broke the world record of “Kipchoge”, a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Prior to this, Kipchoge was considered the greatest marathon runner of all time, and Kiptum was regarded as Kipchoge’s successor and had a good chance of challenging the marathon within two hours. He was scheduled to run the Rotterdam Marathon in April, which would have been his first race since setting the world record, but has now been unable to attend.

Kiptum’s death in a car accident shocked everyone from all walks of life. The President of Kenya issued a condolence message, and the President of World Athletics also expressed regret.
