Riots Erupt in Oupeye: Castle of Chaos in a Peaceful Village

Scenes of riots took place in the night from Friday to Saturday around the castle of Oupeye (province of Liège) following the events which occurred on Friday followingnoon and during which a young man was shot dead by the police, reports the mayor of the town, Serge Fillot. The police made regarding ten arrests.

“It was a bit of a war scene in the center of Oupeye. I’ve never seen that in Oupeye. We only see that in big cities or on the television news, and we experienced that in a village of 6,000 inhabitants, ”reacts the mayor. “It was the police who were directly targeted, with the setting of traps to try to trap the police and attack the men, the use of molotov cocktails, to avenge the death of the young man who died this Friday . »

In order to contain the demonstrators, the local authorities had to ask for reinforcements from the surrounding police zones, including that of Liège, and from the federal reserve. The police notably had to use fire engines and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, and the firefighters intervened to extinguish the beginnings of a fire. “The facts took place between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. and were concentrated around the castle of Oupeye, identified as the center of power in the town. There are no injured policemen, but the men are shocked”, further specifies the mayor.
