Riots at Azerbaijan Embassy in Beirut: Lebanese of Armenian Origin Protest | Latest News and Updates

The Lebanese Internal Security Forces announced on Friday that two officers and 23 of its members were injured as a result of riots that occurred Thursday when Lebanese of Armenian origin demonstrated in front of the Azerbaijan embassy in Beirut.

The Internal Security Forces reported statement “Its keenness to respect freedom of expression, provided that it does not constitute an attack on the freedom of others or an infringement on public or private property.”

She explained, “Article 1 of Law No. 17 regulating the Internal Security Forces entrusted this institution with guarding diplomatic missions in Lebanon, and it calls on citizens to respect the law and exercise a spirit of responsibility.”

The statement indicated that this “comes following riots occurred in front of the Azerbaijani embassy in Beirut on Thursday, as approximately 1,500 people gathered, including politicians and clerics, to express their anger as a result of the current events” in the Azerbaijani Karabakh region.

He revealed that “the demonstration included riots and throwing firecrackers, stones, sticks, glass containers, and others containing colored materials at members of the Internal Security Forces.”

He stressed that “following the increase in the pace of riots by the demonstrators, there was friction with the force assigned to protect the embassy building, so things returned to normal following they were forced to use tear gas bombs.”

Hundreds of Lebanese of Armenian origin gathered Thursday in front of the Azerbaijani embassy in Beirut and attacked the security and anti-riot forces who were directed to guard the embassy with Molotov cocktails, fireworks, stones and sticks.

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched an anti-terrorism operation “with the aim of establishing constitutional order in Nagorno-Karabakh,” which ended a day later with an agreement to stop the operation and for the illegal armed groups and Armenian armed forces present in Nagorno-Karabakh to disarm and evacuate their military positions.
