Five police officers and a supermarket employee were injured and the checkout area of a supermarket branch in Vienna-Donaustadt was badly damaged: This is the result of a police operation on Tuesday afternoon against a rioter at the branch on Breitenleer Straße. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, a 32-year-old rioted in the store around 1 p.m. and punched an employee in the face before fleeing. He left the checkout area devastated with, among other things, cleared shelves. Officers from the Quadenstrasse police station stopped him near the branch, prompting massive resistance from the Polish citizen. He attacked the police officers and injured five so badly that they could not continue their duty. Only with the help of other officers did they overpower the man, who had to be handcuffed and shackled. What made the 32-year-old freak out remained unclear – as well as whether and to what extent alcohol played a role.
