Riot Games canceled a fighting game similar to Smash Bros.

Riot Games has worked on a wide variety of projects derived from the League of Legends universe, such as League of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, the now-disbanded alternative gaming division Riot Forge and soon 2XK0, their next 2 vs. 2 fighting game coming in 2025.

However, the latter would not be the only game aimed at the Fighting Games community by Riot, as a recent report revealed that they would have cancelled a Super Smash Bros. style game, which had the code name Pool Party.

According to the journalist Mikhail Klimentovthe platform fighting game would be set in the League of Legends universe and at the time of its cancellation between 70 and 80 developers were already working on a prototype.

The report claims that Riot executives were no longer convinced that there was enough consumer appetite for a Smash Bros. rival. They mention that the decision was influenced by the performance of Warner’s free-to-play crossover fighting game, MultiVersus, Title that is available since May 28th of this year.

Riot Games has been introducing several changes in recent years

Pool Party was introduced as a hardcore fighting game, but later evolved to include party gameplay elements and casual mechanics before being cancelled.

“We always have multiple projects in various stages of research and development, and project changes happen multiple times a year,” Riot senior communications director Joe Hixson said in a statement.

About half of the team working on the game have been offered reassignments within the studio. Most of the other members are said to be considering applying for internal roles.

In March 2024, Riot Games announced the restart of development of its long-awaited League of Legends MMORiot Games co-founder Marc Merrill posted a thread on X to inform regarding the project. He clarified that the game is not cancelled, but they decided to restart its development, which means that its release will still be several years away.
