Riot at asylum accommodation in Frankenburg – ooe.ORF.at

Chronicle

In the asylum accommodation in Frankenburg (Vöcklabruck district), there was a scuffle with dozens of participants on Saturday. A short time later, some asylum seekers gathered for a spontaneous rally. A large police operation was the result.

This year, the federal government turned an empty company hall in Frankenburg into accommodation for 300 asylum seekers in order to cushion the large influx. About 40 refugees got into a fight there on Saturday followingnoon – Syrians and Afghans. Both groups accused each other of keeping each other from sleeping by intentionally making noise. Some of the beds in the asylum accommodation are only provisionally separated.

Three involved injured

According to supervisors, a scuffle ensued with around 40 men. Three people involved were also injured. Although the police were no longer able to identify the perpetrators, they have forbidden a 19-year-old Syrian from entering the accommodation once more. That led to renewed uproar in the evening. About 40 Syrian refugees took to the streets with signs. The police were able to calm the situation and have now stepped up patrols there.

“Reduction in the number of asylum seekers necessary”

ÖVP regional councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer announced on Sunday that he would work to improve security measures in Frankenburg and ensure an increased police presence. In a broadcast, Hattmannsdorfer also makes it clear that a reduction in the number of asylum seekers in the federal district in Frankenburg is necessary and that corresponding talks with the ministry are already underway.
