Since the beginning of the week the pier in front of Porto Rio has been torn down and for many this solves a major problem of the coastal zone of the area, as the old pier according to experts was causing issues of coastal erosion.
The former president of the community of Rio Nikolitsa Betihava, however, pointed out and reminded that the flooding phenomena that occasionally affect the Posidonos coastal road will remain.
In the area, especially from the autumn months onwards, whenever there are strong waves and strong winds, combined with heavy rainfall, Poseidonos Street floods, making it inaccessible and dangerous for pedestrians, drivers and shops in the coastal zone.
“The problem with the floods will remain, if the OPLA does not correct the poor workmanship on the slope of the Western Pier of the Rio which is visible to the naked eye,” emphasized Ms. Betihava.
The authorities of Patras are aware of the problem, but for years no action has been taken to solve it, beyond cleaning the wells along the pier. However, it has been proven that this solution is not enough to prevent the coastal road from flooding. Ms. Betihava continues to suggest the following: “It is impossible for the well to accept the entire volume of water. There is a receiver for the volume of water and that is the Castle lake, if ever the western entrance is opened with a reverse slope from the one that the Western Pier now has.
Essentially, what Ms. Bettihava is asking for is to continue the actions on the issue of the West Pier, as well as the creation of a marina where they are now depositing the dredges for sale. “The deputy regional governor Fokion Zaimis is aware of all the above issues, and I believe in his help to solve these problems,” he concluded.
The Municipality of Patreon, however, has launched some interventions mainly through the cleaning of wells, so that the rain network can respond to the first heavy rains and sea waves.
