At first glance, Fabian Rieder’s move to Stade Rennes seems surprising. Not the Bundesliga or the Premier League, but Ligue 1 will be the new home of the 21-year-old. But in Rennes, Rieder seems to have found exactly the team that will continue to push his career forward.

The West French have been playing at a consistently high level in the championship for years. In the past season they were able to qualify for a European competition for the sixth time in a row. In the Europa League they made it to the 1/16 finals last year and are back in this competition this year.

Earned a lot of money

A look at the Rennes squad shows that transfers like that of Rieder are not uncommon. With the exception of Nemanja Matic, who came from AS Roma this summer at the age of 35, and goalie Steve Mandanda (38), all regular players are under 30 years old. The young players are given responsibility early on – and they repay this trust with strong performances.

They are also rewarded with transfers to top clubs. 21-year-old winger Jérémy Doku joined Manchester City in the summer for €60m. Lesley Ugochukwu, two years his junior, to Chelsea for 27 million. With Lovro Majer (to Wolfsburg) and Loïc Badé (to Seville), two other regular players have also used the club as a stepping stone and left. The Stade Rennes cash register should now be well filled.

Attacking football

The 56-year-old Bruno Génésio has been on the sidelines at Rennes since March 2021. The Frenchman prefers a 4-3-3 formation with two attacking midfielders. A position that Rieder could also occupy optimally.

In general, the “Red-Blacks” rely on attractive, offensive football with quick transitions. The eight goals from the first three league games confirm the team’s forward drive.

Swiss near Rennes

Rieder is the seventh Swiss player to join Rennes. Alex Frei (117 games/52 goals) and Gelson Fernandes (101/1) played over 100 games for the team from Brittany. They then left the club for the Bundesliga – to Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

For Rieder, the first thing to do is to assert himself at Rennes. If he succeeds, the door to a great career will be open. With the move to France, the first step has already been taken.
