The Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin called this Sunday to vote in the elections on November 5 on the island for “a new homeland”, the motto of the Country Alliance that contests the elections on the traditional two-party system.
In a story on his Instagram account, Martin published a message urging electoral participation accompanied by an image in which he appears hugging the Puerto Rican flag.
“Every time we exercise our right to vote, we define the future of our families, friends and communities. This Tuesday, November 5, we will have the power to elect leaders who represent our needs and our dreams of a better Puerto Rico,” the message begins.
The artist, who does not live on the island, defended that distance does not disconnect him from the problems but rather strengthens his “commitment and desire to see Puerto Rico reborn.”
“I ask you to talk to your neighbors, family and friends, and motivate them to vote. The change towards a new homeland begins with your vote,” he concluded.
‘New Homeland’ is the motto of the alliance between the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC), whose candidate for governor is the independentist Juan Dalmau.
According to surveys published by the two main newspapers on the island, Dalmau obtains 29% of voting intention, while Jenniffer González, the candidate of the ruling New Progressive Party (PNP), would be ahead with the favor of 31% or the 37%, depending on the survey.
The other two candidates for governor of Puerto Rico are Jesús Manuel Ortiz, of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), located in third place in voting intention; and Javier Jiménez, from Proyecto Dignidad (PD), in the fourth.
It is not the first time that Martin has spoken out about the elections. On October 22, he published a message in which he accused the PNP of corruption and defended the Country Alliance.
“Probability of communism if the Country Alliance wins: 0%. Probability of corruption and incompetence if the PNP wins: 100%,” said the text posted on his Instagram.
Other artists on the island such as Bad Bunny and Residente have also been very critical of the PNP and have shown their direct or indirect support for the Country Alliance.
At the closing of the Alliance campaign, which is being held this Sunday in San Juan, numerous artists will perform and the surprise arrival of Bad Bunny is expected, who has hinted at his participation in several messages on social networks.
For its part, the PNP is closing its campaign in Guaynabo, in the metropolitan area, while the PPD is carrying out a caravan through several municipalities on the island.
Puerto Ricans will go to the polls to elect governor, resident commissioner, legislators, senators and mayors, as well as to vote in a non-binding referendum on the political status of the island, a Commonwealth of the United States.
