Ricky Davis named Minnesota high school coach

« I like this recruitment, it’s different. I don’t think anyone expected this name to appear as a candidate for this coaching position. », seems surprised Minneapolis North basketball operations boss Trent Witz. This school has decided to trust a certain Ricky Davis to support the establishment’s young team.

The former NBA player (1998-2010), who left the big league at just 30, is no stranger to Minnesota. During his career, he passed through Wolves between 2006 and 2007, following a trade around Wally Szczerbiak. Next to Kevin Garnetthe had also signed his best averages there, with nearly 18 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds in a hundred games without many victories.

The 21st choice of the Hornets in the 1998 draft, passed by the Cavs, the Celtics or the Clippers, is not unknown in the world of coaching either. Because according to Trent Witz, he had experiences with Texas teams at the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) level.

He will have the heavy task of replacing Larry McKenzie, a veritable local coaching monument. The 65-year-old announced his retirement at the end of July following a 24-year career, during which he won six state championships with several Minnesota facilities, including North.

First coach to win four consecutive titles (2000-2003), with Minneapolis Henry High School, he was also inducted into the Minnesota High School Hall of Fame this year with an impressive record of 481 wins and 166 losses.

« I hope he will be able to carry on this tradition that Coach McKenzie started. We will be ready to receive it and welcome it “Poster Trent Witz, speaking of Ricky Davis, before adding:” Children are the first thing we think of. »
