No one is unanimous in life and especially not PK Subban. During his time with the Montreal Canadiens, he was as much liked by some fans as he was hated by others. But one thing is for sure, Subban had CH tattooed on his heart, for better and for worse.
Yes, he put the music too loud. Yes, he was too exuberant. Yes, it took up space, too much space according to many. He had a ton of flaws that would have gone unnoticed among NBA and NFL players, but as he navigated the sometimes prehistoric world of hockey, his flamboyant character traits eventually drove him out of Montreal.
But no one can take away from him that he deeply loved the city of Montreal, the Canadian hockey club and the people here.
While on the La Puck podcast yesterday, Richard Labbé of La Presse revealed another great story that clearly shows that Subban was a different guy from the others. Both on and off the ice, the Ontarian gave his all for the public.
Every year, says Labbé, teachers from disadvantaged backgrounds wrote to him to bring four or five of their students to see CH training in Brossard and have the chance to meet players. Among the players that young people wanted to see, systematically, there was Subban.
“He took 20 to 30 minutes each time with the youngsters when most of his teammates were passing by. He chatted with them and was interested in them. I’ve seen him do that several times. – Richard Labbe
The journalist adds by indicating that Subban signed anything because the young people did not have the money to have 300$ jerseys, they arrived with napkins to be signed sometimes. For Subban, there was never a problem. Even as regularly, he offered them caps as a gift so that they left with a souvenir of this meeting.
“Me, what I remember from PK Subban is that. People who say he’s selfish, it’s so nonsense! – Richard Labbe
We all have in mind the famous commitment that PK Subban made with the Montreal Children’s Hospital to help them raise $10 million in donations, but what this anecdote shows us is that he was not doing that. only for cameras. Even in private, he was very generous towards the Montreal public.
We’ll never know, but who knows if Subban wouldn’t have been a top defenseman even longer had he continued to play with the Montreal Canadiens. He’s a guy who was so fueled by pressure that it might have led him to maintain his level of performance for longer. That and not having chronic back pain.
