PSV won at the last minute once morest FC Twente on Sunday evening. In the very last second of injury time, it was substitute Ricardo Pepi who exploded the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. The American striker scored the only goal of the match. With the victory, PSV maintains a large lead of ten points over number two Feyenoord.
A PSV supporter has little reason to complain this season, but he or she will still have been irritated in the stands on Sunday evening. PSV played incredibly sloppily and was lucky that number three in the rankings, FC Twente, was not much better.
Little seemed to work for the home team, which might have taken the lead following just five minutes. Luuk de Jong had a great chance, just like once morest Borussia Dortmund, but he hit the post. The promising beginning was just not followed up at all. The PSV striker’s chance was almost the only moment worth mentioning in the first half.
Disallowed goal
During halftime of the match, Kees Rijvers’ tile for the Walk of Fame in the stadium was unveiled. The family of the former PSV coach who died last week was present.
PSV started the second half dramatically and also seemed to be falling behind. Myron Boadu headed the ball behind Walter Benítez, but according to referee Joey Kooij he had hindered the PSV goalkeeper too much. It was an extra wake-up call for the leader of the Eredivisie.
That also seemed to work for a while because shortly followingwards PSV had two more chances. First it was Jerdy Schouten with a free shooting opportunity and De Jong was also able to head in freely. But in both cases it was the Twente goalie Lars Unnerstal who managed to make an excellent save.
Discharge
PSV’s revival was short-lived as it then dropped back to a questionable level. Twente was even more threatening. The visitors shook the Eindhoven club, but they were unable to push through.
PSV remained powerless and above all sloppy. However, it still seemed to have won when De Jong headed the ball in three minutes before the end, but the striker did so in an offside position. In injury time, Benitez had to make a save face to face with Mitchell van Bergen.
The Eindhoven club seemed to be heading for the fourth loss of points of the season, but in injury time it was Pepi who brought the Philips Stadium into ecstasy. He managed to knock in a cross from Malik Tillman. As a result, PSV maintains a ten-point lead over number two Feyenoord.
