The filmmaker films his painter friend Ricardo Cavallo in a beautiful documentary on art which reveals a self-portrait.

It’s a story of glances between two men who have been friends for around forty years. One paints, the other films it, that is to say shows us a fragment of the painting happening, most of the time in situ, on the motif, at the foot of the cliffs of Morlaix, in a cave almost inaccessible by dirt roads, unless you enter after a long walk in fisherman’s waders, full of slopes, climbs, water holes, wild grass, swamps. There is a western aspect in Ricardo and Painting, this latest documentary by Barbet Schroeder, who after tackling portraits as diverse as those of Amin Dada, Koko, the talking gorilla, the lawyer Jacques Vergès, or a genocidal Burmese monk, focuses on a man much closer to him, his artist friend who we will discover to be his alter ego in many ways.
