The deputy head of the caretaker government, His Excellency Al-Shami, confirmed that “caretaker head Najib Mikati will not accept the extension or renewal of the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh.”
And he stressed in a televised interview that he “does not have any information regarding Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s request to extend Riyadh Salameh.” And he considered that “a new governor of the Banque du Liban should not be appointed in the absence of a president of the republic,” noting that “one of the scenarios presented at the end of Riad Salameh’s term is the receipt of the first deputy governor of the Banque du Liban.”
Al-Shami confirmed, “The name of Jihad Azour was proposed for the governorship of the Banque du Liban, but he thinks that the latter is no longer welcoming the idea following his name was nominated for the presidency.”
Al-Shami stressed that “the position of Governor of the Banque du Liban must enjoy national acceptance,” ruling out the renewal and extension of Riad Salameh.
On the issue of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, Al-Shami considered that “the House of Representatives and the Banque du Liban bear responsibility for the delay in implementing the agreement with the Monetary Fund, due to the populism with which some deal with this file,” noting that “half of the reforms requested by the Fund have been implemented so far.” However, the final agreement has not yet been reached.
He explained, “The government is working before the IMF to return $100,000 to each of the small depositors, but in installments,” stressing that “the money of large depositors will also be returned, but over a longer period, especially since large depositors can wait longer.”
Al-Shami stressed that the issue of the two “Hezbollah” tents on the southern border will be resolved peacefully.
