Firefighters said it was difficult to put out the fire due to strong winds. 30,000 people, including tourists, were evacuated from the island, home to a million people. It is reported that a large part of the island has been destroyed by forest fire.
Rhodes Island is one of the popular tourist destinations in Greece that attracts tourists from different parts of the world. Police spokeswoman Konstalina Dimoglidou said it was the first time that so many people had been evacuated together. Many hotels on the island have been gutted by fire. Residents of the rest are also in fear.
Greece is one of the European countries hit by heat waves. A forest fire that spread to Layerma village destroyed houses and a church on Saturday night. Many hotels also caught fire. Officials said the aim was to prevent them from reaching the jungles in the north. The power plant was shut down as a safety precaution. As a result, most of the island of Rhodes was without electricity. More than 200 firemen are trying to douse the fire.
The Greek Foreign Office and various embassies have opened a special center at Rhodes Airport to help those who lost their travel documents in the fire. Tour operators have hired more charter flights to take tourists who want to leave the island.
Last year 25 lakh tourists visited Rhodes.
