RHI Magnesita takes the next step towards net zero emissions

2023-07-18 14:44:50

Vienna (OTS) RHI Magnesita, the global leader in the refractory industry, announces a partnership with Compact Membrane Systems (CMS) to conduct a new carbon capture pilot project. This cooperation is an important milestone on the way to achieving net-zero emissions. CMS, a pioneer in separation solutions for low-carbon intensity processes, was presented to RHI Magnesita as part of its participation in the Verbund X Accelerator program in 2022, which promotes collaboration between established industry leaders and start-ups. “The Verbund X-Accelerator was a great experience and an excellent opportunity to meet industry players who are actively taking steps towards decarbonization,” says Erica Nemser, CEO of CMS.

RHI Magnesita is the world’s leading manufacturer of refractory materials used in all high-temperature industrial processes. As the market leader, RHI Magnesita feels it has an ecological and economic responsibility to promote sustainability. Reducing CO2 emissions is therefore one of the company’s top priorities. A significant part of the company’s carbon dioxide emissions is released during the processing of raw materials. The decarbonization of the company therefore requires unprecedented innovation and technology.

Andreas Drescher, expert in sustainable technology and decarbonization at RHI Magnesita, explains: “Collaboration between established industrial companies and start-ups is crucial to achieve the sustainable progress that we strive for at RHI Magnesita. As the world’s leading manufacturer of refractory materials we have a responsibility to drive sustainability forward significantly. Reducing CO2 emissions is therefore one of our top priorities.”

Pilot plant planned for 2023 in Austria

After an intensive research and testing phase in 2022, RHI Magnesita will implement CMS’ innovative Optiperm™ carbon membrane technology, which captures off-gases from high-temperature processes, in a pilot plant. This pilot plant is scheduled to go into operation in the fourth quarter of 2023 at an Austrian site of RHI Magnesita. The pilot project aims to verify the effectiveness of the technology in a real industrial environment and pave the way for further phases and scalable projects.

Andreas Drescher comments: “Decarbonising our industry requires unprecedented innovation and investment. Therefore, we have already announced that we will invest 50 million euros in technology research and the construction of pilot plants. CMS is one of the projects realized as part of this ongoing investment. We look forward to the test results of the carbon membrane technology and the prospect of sharing our knowledge with other industrial partners to accelerate their journey to net-zero emissions.”

This partnership marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices. The collaboration between CMS and RHI Magnesita will drive the advancement of sustainable technologies in energy-intensive industries and facilitate the transition to a greener and more sustainable future.
