Immunoglobulin G (or IG) antibodies play a driving role in inflammation in infectious and autoimmune diseases. However, if these same antibodies, taken from the blood of healthy donors, are cleaned and injected into the bloodstream of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis, they therefore have the opposite effect. They become anti-inflammatory. The cause of this mechanism was previously unknown. Researchers have just discovered that these antibodies from healthy donors are able to suppress a central self-destructive process of rheumatoid arthritis: the degeneration and remodeling of bone and cartilage tissue in the joints. The results of the study show how this process is suppressed at the molecular level by antibodies.
