Revolutionizing Weather Stations for Sustainable Family Farming Solutions

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Through joint work by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (Dinac), the strengthening of the country’s network of meteorological stations is planned, in order to have agrometeorological information that benefits family farming.

To advance this work, the MAG and Dinac signed an inter-institutional technical cooperation agreement, through the Meteorological Directorate (DMH).

The agreement aims to strengthen the network of meteorological stations of the National Directorate of Project Coordination and Administration (Dincap) in the area of influence of the Project for the Improvement of Peasant and Indigenous Family Farming in the departments of the Eastern Region (Promafi).

This will allow for the creation of an agrometeorological information system that will give the Ministry of Agriculture unrestricted and free access to all the data required for specific needs related to the agricultural sector.

The aim of this is to strengthen production capacity and disseminate information through an agrometeorological service aimed at farmers in family, peasant and indigenous agriculture, says the MAG.

Within the framework of this project, a tender was held for the acquisition of an information and early warning production chain, monitoring of agrometeorological station networks and management of a climatological database to strengthen the capacity of agrometeorological services.

Meteo France International, a subsidiary of the French National Meteorological Service, was awarded the contract to install the systems and equipment in the Data Center of the Methodology and Hydrology Department (DMH).

Equipment and systems were also acquired, including their respective configurations, establishing the facilities within the DMH data center, with the aim of providing future projection and sustainability to the products developed through it.

To consolidate the system, MAG will donate to Dinac the software and licenses for the central servers that include an agrometeorological information and early warning system, monitoring of station networks, and management of the climatological database.

In addition to three computer systems with their developed configuration, hardware for system support, central servers for the systems and workstations for the system operators

The MAG will also manage the transfer of the acquired equipment and systems to Dinac as a donation, coordinate the activities and appoint a person responsible for the implementation of the project’s sustainability plan.

DMH-Dinac, for its part, undertakes to be exclusively responsible for the control, post-warranty maintenance, monitoring and custody of all inventoried equipment and systems.
