The Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, during the press conference about the government’s actions in its problem water shortage noted that “at this stage we ask for consumption in moderation. If we have a bad season, we might consider other measures that limit consumption to be safe in the possibility of extreme events.”
Mr. Skylakakis emphasized desalination, which he described as a “cold reserve” independent of the anombria, which could offer solutions both in Attica and on the islands. He emphasized that the problem of water scarcity is concentrated in the South Aegean, in some areas of the Peloponnese and Eastern Crete. Regarding Attica, he pointed out that it is irrigated by Central Greece and has been affected in the medium term by the dry winters of the previous two years.
Alternatives
In order to avoid problems in the capital’s water supply, EYDAP has already implemented plan b, which it prepared by observing the hydrological conditions and putting the reserve reservoirs and boreholes into the equation. Referring to the alternatives being considered, the managing director of EYDAP, Charalambos Sahinisfocused among other things on the use of recycled water that is currently discharged into the sea from Psytallia and Thriasio. As he said, it is being considered that Thriasio water will be sent to Helleniq Energy, which is the largest consumer of EYDAP, through an investment, while a Master Plan is being carried out to examine where the recycled Koropi water can be used.
It is worth noting that the regions of Corinth, Boeotia and Fokida will from now on have EYDAP, while at the same time the island EYDAP will be activated to support the islands that have a problem (e.g. Cyclades) and Crete. Accordingly, EYATH expands to the rest of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki.
PROJECTS UNDER ROUTE
In collaboration with the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, through NSRF, funding is provided: a) approximately 150 million euros, in Corinthia, Saronic, Alexandroupoli, Kassandra and Rethymno for holistic water supply and sewage projects and b) approximately 50 million euros are directed on arid islands, mainly for desalination projects.
At the same time, water supply projects, amounting to 80 million euros, are being launched, for immediate implementation, with financing, from the PDE of the Ministry of the Interior.
The proposed Island Decarbonization Fund includes desalination and multi-purpose reservoirs, combined with RES projects, with a state contribution totaling 166 million euros, with the possibility of these projects reaching up to 450 million euros depending on the price of CO2. Among the projects that are underway, as revealed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the TIF, is also the connection of the reservoir of Evinos and Mornos with the artificial lake of Kremasto.
