Regarding the problem of water scarcity, Mr. Skylakakis pointed out that the problem is concentrated in the southern Aegean, in some areas of the Peloponnese and eastern Crete. Regarding Attica, he pointed out that it is supplied with water from central Greece and has been affected in the medium term by the dry winters of the previous two years.
At the same time, the minister noted that if the drought continues, the existing reserves for Attica will last for four years.
In this context, the main interventions being launched are the strengthening of the Evinos reservoir, but also the interconnection with Kremasta. He also spoke of a strategic reserve with desalination, taking advantage of lower energy costs in the future.
Projects
Regarding the investments proposed by providers, a total of 2127 projects are foreseen. Of these, 681 are new projects worth 2 billion euros and 1446 upgrade / replacement projects worth 3.9 billion euros.
Among the funding sources are the islands’ Decarbonization fund, water supply projects (dams, reservoirs) following negotiations with the Commission amounting to 166 million.
EYDAP is expanding
Corinth, Boeotia and Fokida will from now on have EYDAP, as it became known.
At the same time, the EYDAP islands will be activated to support the islands that have a problem (eg the Cyclades) and Crete in which case it is needed.
Accordingly, EYATH expands to the rest of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki.

As the managing director of EYDAP Haris Sahinis noted during the press conference, “if we do not do something now, it is possible that we will not have water later. Until 2 months ago, the water we drank in Athens came from Evinos, now we will use the reserve reservoirs and boreholes which can contribute 75 million cubic meters a year”.
Referring to the alternatives under consideration, he focused on the use of recycled water that is currently discharged into the sea from Psytallia and Thriasio. As he said, it is being considered that Triasio water will be sent to Helleniq Energy, which is the largest consumer of EYDAP, through an investment, while a Master Plan is being carried out to examine where the recycled Koropi water can be used.
Accordingly, consumers must be careful how they consume water, “it must be a general rule of life regardless of water availability,” Mr. Skylakakis emphasized. “If we have another bad period we may take further measures” said the minister.
