Revolutionizing Radiotherapy: The Jules Bordet Institute’s Advancements in Cancer Treatment

The Jules Bordet Institute, since its recent move and with the financial support of 6.5 million euros from the Jules Bordet Association, has taken a significant step forward in the treatment of cancer. The Radiotherapy Department now has the Linac 1.5 Tesla MRI, a cutting-edge technology and the only one in Belgium, marking the successful treatment of the 100th patient.
Linac MRI is revolutionizing radiotherapy with its ability to combine the precise imaging of MRI with the therapeutic power of a linear accelerator. This fusion enables a “live adaptive” radiotherapy approach. For patients, this translates into personalized treatment, adjusted daily according to morphological changes in the tumor and surrounding organs. The objective is twofold: to reduce the toxicity of the treatment while increasing control over the tumor, and to preserve the quality of life of patients by reducing their trips to the hospital to 3-5 visits, compared to 20-35 for traditional treatment. .
Towards ultra-personalized medicine
Linac MRI paves the way for tomorrow’s medicine, with the ability to obtain functional images revealing crucial information about tumor biology. The next step envisaged is the adaptation of the treatment to the specific tumor biology of the patient, thus embodying the concept of ultra-personalized medicine.
This technology primarily targets cancers of the abdomen, pelvis, as well as those that are technically difficult to treat, such as pancreatic, liver and adrenal gland cancers.

Advanced research is underway, including the integration of patients with pancreatic cancer into an innovative randomized stereotaxy study, led by the Jules Bordet Institute. This study also involves several Belgian centers and illustrates the significant contribution of the institute to the evolution of oncological radiotherapy.
