With a focus on autonomous, networked and electrified systems, ZF is presenting its solutions for the fully integrated, modular electric central drive system Cetrax 2 dual for intercity buses and coaches at the 65th “UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2023” (June 4-7) in Barcelona. It has an integrated three-speed gearbox and delivers a continuous output of 380 kW (517 hp) at a weight of just 385 kilograms.
A further step towards the future of public transport is the new, driverless and fully electric shuttle generation from ZF for use in urban environments and mixed traffic enables autonomous, quiet and emission-free urban passenger transport. With selectable battery capacities between 50 and 100 kWh, the next-generation shuttle can travel up to 130 kilometers. The top speed initially available is 40 km/h, and then 80 km/h in further development. With 15 seats, the shuttle can carry up to 22 passengers.
The technology group will also be presenting its Scalar digital software solution for real-time fleet orchestration of autonomous vehicles and the ZF Bus Connect fleet management system for buses of all drive types in Barcelona. At the UITP World Congress, the company is presenting its new “EcoLife Health Check” module, which is dedicated to increasing vehicle availability. It is ZF’s entry into remote diagnosis for bus fleets. Health Check uses data from the transmission system (engine speed, gear ratio, oil temperature, oil pressure, etc.) to provide information regarding the current condition of the transmission. Because the data is collected online, there is no longer a need to call the bus under investigation back to the depot for analysis. Operators who make the best possible use of the transmission oil, for example, can avoid early maintenance and thus reduce maintenance costs and increase vehicle availability.
As standard, ZF Bus Connect offers functions to optimize driving and energy or fuel consumption, to avoid dangerous situations, to monitor the battery charge level and the wear and tear of other systems.
ZF is also showing its first brake assistance system for city buses with active intervention to reduce the consequences of a collision and its Ecolife 2 automatic transmission. At the same time, the new design is lighter and easier to maintain. Features include stop-start and coasting, and fast but smoother and more comfortable gear shifting. With Ecofife Coachline there are new variants that are suitable for coaches up to 2800 Nm thanks to a higher torque range. (awm)
