Revolutionizing Endoscopy: A Game-Changing Video Capsule Guided by Remote Controllers

Endoscopy is a medical technique that allows you to visualize the inside of the human body using a flexible and luminous instrument called an endoscope. It is commonly used for the diagnosis and treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric ulcers, colon polyps and stomach tumors. One of the limitations of this technique is that the endoscope cannot be piloted directly into the target organ, which may hamper incomplete assessment of the region being examined. These video clips move through the body under the effect of gravity and body movements. However, they cannot be manually steered for more targeted exploration.

A capsule driven by video game controllers

Researchers from George Washington University have recently developed a video capsule for endoscopy that can be controlled remotely using joysticks comparable to those of a video game. The capsule is equipped with a magnet and can be guided in the stomach thanks to a magnetic field generated by an external device. This allows the doctor to explore the target region with greater precision and clearer visibility. In addition, this technique also avoids some of the undesirable side effects associated with traditional endoscopies, such as pain, organ perforation and infections.

The results compared to those of a traditional endoscopy

The effectiveness of the video-controlled capsule was evaluated in a study conducted with 40 patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders. The researchers measured the viewing rate of the video capsule and compared these results to those of a traditional endoscopy. The results showed that the video capsule had a visualization rate of 95%, comparable to the results obtained with a standard endoscopy. Additionally, no high-risk lesions were identified.
However, it is important to note that the video capsule does not yet have the capability to perform biopsies of detected lesions and the researchers stress that further research is needed to assess the costs, benefits and limitations of this technique by compared to standard methods of endoscopy.
