Revolutionizing Business School Education: The Implications of the Federal-Level Reform

2023-09-16 19:19:57

Business school education has been completely reformed at federal level. No more maths or French as disciplines, now room for “customer relationship management” or even “my social and economic environment”. Barely four weeks following the start of the school year, teachers are sounding the alarm.

This reform was carried out quietly, but at full speed. The decision was taken at the federal level in August 2021. However, its concrete implications are far-reaching. We can even speak of a revolution, with traditional disciplines falling by the wayside.

From now on, the new “areas of competence” are supposed to bring the full-time business school – which also delivers a CFC – closer to the professional world and in-company apprenticeship. This change of program is not happening without clashes.

Implementation deemed too rapid

Teachers’ unions praise the approach, but consider its introduction hasty. The French-speaking trade union organizations contacted by the RTS believe that the two-year period is too short for such a project.

Waël Almoman, member of the Geneva Secondary Teachers’ Union office, the post-compulsory teachers’ union, compares this reform to a TGV launched at full speed once morest a wall “hoping that it passes”.

Stronger discontent in Geneva

Particularly harsh words once morest this transfer, which seems to be less well accepted in the canton of Geneva.

At the end of the lake, in fact, a clear majority of students follow the course in school full-time, unlike in other cantons where there are more apprentices in dual training, that is to say partly in a company. The change in method therefore particularly affects Geneva students.

There are numerous complaints once morest the reform in Geneva. The teachers wrote a six-page list. Above all, they denounce a lack of training: only three half-days were devoted to it last spring. They also complain of having discovered the study plan at the last moment and claim not to know what exactly is expected of the students.

Meetings with management

Even more worrying, some teachers do not feel competent to teach the new lessons.

The cases of a French teacher obliged to give an arts lesson and a maths teacher having to teach a logo creation lesson were, for example, reported to the RTS.

The Geneva union is already talking regarding exhaustion and sick leave and is now demanding adjustments. Meetings with management are even already planned in certain establishments.
