Visit to the mixed fertilizer factory in Rwanda

The first state-of-the-art blended fertilizer plant was unveiled on December 20, 2023, in Kigali. Fruit of a collaboration between OCP Africa, the development fund Value et l’Agro Processing Trust Corporation (APTC – Agri-Food Processing Trust Company) aims to increase crop yields by 40%.

The Rwanda Fertilizer Company (RFC), located on over 8 hectares in Bugesera Industrial Park, houses a 4 hectare blending unit with a production capacity of 120 tonnes per hour, equivalent to 100,000 tonnes per year. It also has a 25,000 ton storage unit, a modern laboratory equipped with the latest analytical technologies for product quality control, soil analysis and characterization, as well as a future four-hectare pilot farm dedicated to agronomic trials and farmer training.

The Rwandan Minister of Commerce, Jean-Chrysostome Ngabitsinze, and his counterpart of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Ildephonse Musafiri, accompanied by the CEO of OCP Africa, Dr. Mohamed Anouar Jamali, visited this ultra-modern factory which represents a milestone crucial in the production of high quality fertilizers, started in August 2023.

With an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes, the blended fertilizer plant aims to increase crop yield by 40% through customized formulas that optimize soil health and nutrient balance. In partnership with RFC, OCP Africa is committed to strengthening food security and fostering agricultural development, not only in Rwanda, but also across the entire East African region, as highlighted by Dr. Mohamed Anouar Jamali.

A joint venture worth more than 19 MUSD

Signed in August 2018, the joint venture is 57.4% owned by OCP Africa, 32.6% by the Agaciro development fund and 10% by APTC. The newly launched blended fertilizer plant required an investment of over $19.2 million and is expected to generate approximately 50 direct jobs. It will facilitate the transfer of expertise to improve Rwanda’s skills in the fertilizer industry and contribute to a 25% increase in farmers’ income, thereby promoting economic empowerment, according to RFC.
