Engineers from the University of North Carolina (USA) developed a gadget that might one day save you. The invention is called the Space-Time-On-Demand Patch, or SOP for short.
The gadget is a smart patch consisting of a flexible and sticky chip containing hundreds of microscopic needles. These needles act as a “reservoir” – inside each needle there is a liquid medicine that enters the body only when commanded.
The surface of each needle is covered with a thin layer of gold. This layer allows the needles not to dissolve upon contact with human skin. If necessary, the user can send a command to the patch from a smartphone – the device will begin to heat up, as a result of which the gold film will dissolve and the medicine will enter the body.
It is very useful. For example, you can take your medications on schedule without having to think regarding taking pills at all—just stick on a patch and set a timer. The gadget will administer the medicine itself, and you won’t even feel it.
American scientists are confident that their invention will help make life easier for people dependent on medications. Also, a smart patch will allow you to more effectively treat various diseases by administering medications according to a clear schedule.
