After the closure of Tereos, Escaudoeuvres will soon have a new sugar factory, a micro organic sugar factory which will only produce over the year the equivalent of one day at the former sugar giant, but it will be the first complete sugar made from beets “complete complete, with all the elements of beetroot, with minerals, vitamins” explains Sébastien Lemoine, farmer in Gouzeaucourt and president of the cooperative.

A process that consumes 50% less energy than a conventional sugar factory
A project launched 8 years ago by farmers from Cambrésis, then joined by Breton researchers to develop the process, already tested on micro units for 3 years. A process very different from that of traditional sweets, explains Sébastien Lemoine, farmer in Gouzeaucourt: “it is less energy intensive, we use 50% less energy, and to wash the beets we will use evaporation water, we will be self-sufficient in water”.
A sugar more vanilla than the complete one made from sugar cane, very appreciated by future buyers and processors assures Sébastien Lemoine, also a means for them to relocate their supply.
The objective is also to make the tool profitable by being versatile, while working on the transformation “vegetables unfit for consumption, twisted, split, damaged, which can be transformed into syrup into juice, the idea is that the unit does not work 100 days for beets, but at least 10 months in the ‘year” hopes for Sébastien Lemoine who is banking on 3/4 full time and around ten seasonal workers for the launch of this sugar factory in 205. Work should begin at the beginning of next year.
A project which received support from the regional council, departmental council, but also from the water agency.
